Got a Minute, Maybe Two?

Training Your Horse For Vet Checks
 by Cyndi Rowat

Nothing can spoil your opportunities for success in long distance riding like having a rotten brat who won't stand for examination or trot out for the veterinary judge. This is regarding the equine portion of the team - for those of you who need consultation regarding the human equation you might consider a crop or cattle prod!!! In all seriousness, it is critical to remember that the whole reason the veterinarians are there in the first place is to ensure your horse's well being. Your horse should accept handling from every nook and cranny he's got, should allow a capillary refill test on the gum line and shoulder hydration pinches. Charlottes Webb 30-Mile CTR March 19-20, 2011

Come on down to Webb Wildlife Management Area in Punta Gorda, Charlotte County!  Easy access to the Field Trial Area from I-75 exit 164 or about 30 minutes from Arcadia or Palmdale.

For more information about Webb and photos, please see http://myfwc.com/Recreation/WMASites_BabcockWebb_recreation.htm.  This WMA is 1.5 times the size of Goethe!

30-mile trail based on two distinct loops based on pine flatwoods No gravel on the trails, so barefoot horses will do fine.  Double-track, hard-packed sand trails now have 6 permanent trail markers about every 300-400 feet.  With the exception of several hundred feet of trail, we will follow the new permanent trails.

Ride camp has a large, comfortable lodge with a covered front porch, 2 large bathrooms, 2 showers, full kitchen, covered pavilion and large grill.  For the horses, we have at least a dozen spigots and 46 stalls.  Vet checks in camp

More information to follow and ride entry to be posted in January.

Tip of the Day!

~ Plan your ride carefully. Plan a ride time based on past ride times, weather, trail conditions and the state of conditioning of your horse. Ride to your plan, not to what other horses are doing!
